API Storytelling Workshop (VIRTUAL!)

Storytelling is the heart of who we are as humans. It helps us form our identities and it connects us with others. Within the API community, we have many stories to tell. In this 90 min workshop, we will come together to discover meaningful moments in our lives, learn how to talk about them through story, and then share them with one another to foster connection, community, and solidarity. This is a fun and safe environment to learn about storytelling and find your authentic voice. Participants in the workshop may be invited to share their story on stage at a showcase event in May of 2024 (but this part is optional!)

Why tell stories within our own affinity group? The Asian community is diverse and a growing force within our country; however, we have often been left out of the mainstream narrative in U.S. society—with the frequent “perpetual foreigner” and “model minority myth” stereotypes being the main representation of our stories in U.S. culture. By telling our own stories, we take control of our narratives and we can begin to change the societal narrative. We are each unique and each community within the larger Asian community is also unique. By sharing our stories with one another, we find our commonalities and also uplift our differences. We then can find ways to take those narratives forward to our society to ultimately impact social change and create visibility of our API and Desi communities.
What can I expect in this workshop? Do I have to share a story out loud? Participants will be welcomed into a safe and warm space for all experience levels! You do not need prior storytelling experience to join us, and if you choose, you do not have to share a story aloud! This workshop is first and foremost for you to support your growth as a storyteller. During the workshop, you will be guided through reflective activities to support you in uncovering meaningful stories from your life. You will have the opportunity to share them aloud in small groups if you choose or you may choose to simply listen to others. At the end of the workshop, participants may be invited to share their story on stage at an upcoming API-centered event held in the Capitol in 2024 (but this is totally optional!) Our primary goal is to support and uplift you as an individual and storyteller!
