SUMMARY:Do Tell! (in-person storytelling open-mic)
DESCRIPTION:  \nCome join us at LogOff Brewing for our monthly in-person true storytelling open mic event\, Do Tell! At the event\, you’ll hear personal stories told by regular folks just like you. In fact\, we invite you and anyone else who is interested\, to put their name in our hat for a chance to tell us all a story. You can find the guidelines below. Come out to just listen or come tell a story! Food and beverages are for sell at the venue. \nSecond Tuesday of each month (check our calendar for dates!) \nLogOff Brewing\n3054 Sunrise Blvd Suite J  \nRancho Cordova\, CA 95742 \n  \nGuidelines for Your “Do Tell” Open Mic Story \n\n\n\nTell us a TRUE story about something you did or experienced:  Fiction is wonderful\, but we want to hear about events from your life and things that you have personally experienced! Lectures\, rants\, listicles\, guided meditations\, singalongs\, sermons\, and elevator pitches ALL have their place\, but this isn’t it.\nTry to keep it under 8 minutes:  We’ll give you a gentle one minute warning at 7 minutes; please wrap it up by 8 min so that there’s time for everyone else’s stories.\nLeave your notes and phones behind:  We find that the best personal stories are often those that are told without notes. So please don’t read your story to us – just tell it to us! (And we won’t judge you if you mix up the timeline or forget a part!)\nBe respectful:  We want everyone to feel welcome and respected\, so please do not use stereotypes\, slurs\, racial epithets\, or derogatory language about any group.  Also\, please do not use accents and dialects from cultures that are not your own.  If you are unsure about something in your story\, ask the host.\nAim for an R rating (or less):  We know y’all have some crazy stories (and we wanna hear ‘em)\, but let’s try to keep them R-rated or under.  And please read the room; if there are kids present consider giving a content warning to parents.  Sometimes opting for euphemisms instead of coarse language will do the trick…  And finally\, please give a content warning before your story if you think it could cause anyone fear or anxiety. \n\n\n\nTo put your name in the hat\, show up a little early and find the host! The host will then draw names from the hat and those people will be invited on stage to share their 8-mins-or-less story with the crowd! \nStill have questions? SUMMARY:LGBT+ Stories Workshop at A Seat at the Table
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an LGBT+ centered storytelling workshop at A Seat at the Table in Elk Grove on November 16th at 7 PM! \nLocation: A Seat at the Table\, 9257 Laguna Springs Dr\, Suite 130\nElk Grove\, CA \nDescription: Storytelling is a way to connect with others and understand the events in our lives. SUMMARY:Immigrant Stories (LIVE EVENT!) 2024
DESCRIPTION:The immigrant experience is unique\, beautiful\, and diverse with its share of joys and challenges. Join us on October 30th at 6 PM in the Hinde Auditorium on the campus of Sacramento State for our annual Immigrant Stories\, an event amplifying the lived experiences of our immigrant community members. Five storytellers will take the stage to share their true personal stories of navigating life as an immigrant in Sacramento. Storytellers for the evening include Lucy McCullough\, Janine Mapurunga\, Sara Aghamohammadi\, Nancy Awad\, and Carlos Gaxiola. This event is hosted in partnership with the Dreamer Resource Center of Sacramento State. It is sponsored by Capital Public Radio and SMUD and funded in part by a grant from Sacramento State University. \n  \nAdmission is FREE. \nRSVP\nDate: October 30th\nTime: 6:00 PM\nLocation: Hinde Auditorium in the University Union on the campus of Sacramento State  \n  \n \nASL Interpretation will be provided. If you need accommodations\, please contact Lisa Cantrell at lisa@capitalstorytelling.com so that we can work with you to make this event as accessible as possible. \nThe Hinde Auditorium is located on the first floor of the University Union on the campus of Sac State\, 6000 J Street\, Sacramento. See map and info below for details on location and parking (and click the map to enlarge it). The Hinde Auditorium is highlighted in yellow. Parking is in purple. If you have questions\, email us at info@capitalstorytelling.com or call the Dreamer Resource Center at (916) 278-7734. You may also call Capital Storytelling at 1-(209)-425-2951. \n  \nStorytellers for the evening include \n  \n Lucy McCullough Storyteller Lucy is Mexican born with Nicaraguan roots\, raised in Canada and immigrated to the US in 2004. Her unique upbringing led to her love of all things pop culture\, and that love of pop culture helped spark and shape her interest in story structure and storytelling. She attended her first storytelling classes with Capital Storytelling in the summer of 2019\, with the hopes of using the skills learned at the classes in her everyday life. She officially joined the Capital Storytelling staff in 2023\, where she brings her experience in photography\, videography\, and social media to help Capital Storytelling grow and reach a larger audience. Janine Mapurunga Storyteller Janine Mapurunga is a native of Brazil who felt confined by a culture where machismo and violence against women are prevalent. At the age of 16\, she left everything she knew and came to California alone in search of a place where she could spread her wings. Her undergrad work is in photography and cultural anthropology\, and for grad school she focused on visual culture\, artistic production and research. She got her first camera at age 10 and she helps people tell their stories through her work as a visual storyteller.  She believes in the power of oral storytelling as a tool for collective healing\, understanding and compassion. Carlos Gaxiola Storyteller Carlos is a Mexican immigrant\, coming from the state of Sinaloa\, and being brought over to the U.S. at just 10 months of age. Growing up with American customs as well as Mexican traditions\, the phrase “ni de aqui\, ni de alla” runs true for him. Carlos is currently a Sacramento State student and works for the Dreamer Resource Center on campus. He is passionate about helping others with his same background and hopes that through telling his story he can help others be proud of their immigrant status.                     Nancy Awad Storyteller Nancy is a native Arabic speaker from Egypt and emigrated to the USA eight years ago. She is a mom\, a daughter\, an employee\, and a student. Nancy is currently working towards her degree in social work\, which she expects to receive from Sac State in 2025. For the past three years\, she has been working with Refugees in a nonprofit organization. She is fascinated by the world of social work and loves connecting with people; she finds this work to be deeply fulfilling. This will be her first time sharing a story on stage\, and she is excited for this experience. Outside of parenting and work\, she loves biking\, reading\, writing\, and public speaking.                     Sara Aghamohammadi Storyteller Sara was born in Iran and immigrated to the US with her family when she was two years old. As an Iranian-American\, honoring her dual identities has both enriched her life with cultural depth and\, at times\, ambiguity. Her pursuits are as diverse as her background: a career in medicine\, a hobby in improv comedy\, and a hunger for travel and good food. She learned the art of storytelling through Capital Storytelling in 2020 and has shared the benefits of this craft at work and at the Sacramento Comedy Spot. \n  \nQuestions and Answers! \nWhere is the event located? The event will be in the University Union on the campus of Sac State (the Hinde Auditorium is INSIDE the University Union). See the campus map below. The Union is highlighted in yellow on the map. You can also put “University Union” into your phone’s GPS application and your phone should also direct you to the building!\n\nWhere do I park? There is a parking structure right next to the University Union (see map for purple highlighted parking structures). We suggest that you park in Parking Structure 2. You will need to pay for parking. You can do that by paying at one of the kiosks in the parking structure OR by using the QR code on the campus map to pay by phone. If you are using the QR code and your smart phone to pay\, use the parking code 5115. (You will be prompted for this code when paying with your phone.)\n\nOnce inside the University Union\, you should be able to easily locate the Hinde Auditorium. It is on the first floor. If you are coming from Parking Structure 2 and entering the University Union\, the Hinde should be immediately to your left as you enter. If you can’t find it\, please ask someone in the building! They should be able to easily direct you!\n\n  \n \n  \n                             \n \n  \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook

SUMMARY:Community Story Lab
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly virtual Community Story Lab!  The event is at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. Sign up to share a 5-8 minute story or just show up and listen as an audience member!
