This 2-day class trains individuals to lead storytelling workshops in their places of work\, communities\, schools\, and organizations. \nAugust 7 and 14 @ 9 AM – 2:30 PM PT / 12 PM – 5:30 PM ET (VIRTUAL) \nCOST: $475 \n  \nENROLL\n  \nStorytelling has the power to change our communities and transform the lives of those around us. Creating spaces for people to share and listen to one another’s stories can open up routes to inter-group dialogue\, community building\, and ultimately social change. Capital Storytelling has spent years developing methods to open people up and help them find and share their stories.  We are now offering training for community members (leaders\, educators\, and change makers) to give them methods for facilitating storytelling workshops. In this intensive 2-full-days class\, Executive Director and founder of Capital Storytelling\, Dr. Lisa Cantrell\, will lead you through methods for facilitating storytelling workshops based on those we use at Capital Storytelling (and that we have used in private as well as corporate workshops). She’ll also share insights gained over the years to help you create a brave and compassionate space for story sharing. \nDuring the class\, you will receive instructions along with reflective exercises and out-side-of-class-assignments to push you in your own growth to become a workshop facilitator. By the end of the two sessions\, you will have tools for setting up and leading your own story circle or workshop\, including an informational packet with storytelling prompts\, workshop instructions\, worksheets\, and a slide deck that you can modify and use for your own workshops/story circles. \n  \nWhat will participants do on each day? \nOn Day 1\, participants will watch a demonstration of a 60 minute storytelling workshop. They will then get step-by-step guidance on the individual components of the workshop (along with explanations on why and how for each component). On this day\, participants will get training in the use of storytelling prompts and methods developed at Capital Storytelling for drawing out authentic personal stories from workshop participants. The group will practice using the prompts and activities together and will discuss ways to engage their audiences. Participants will be provided with worksheets and a slide deck to use in their own workshops. They will then be given “homework” for the week that includes reflective questions and an assignment to practice what they have learned thus far in a small group setting before the following class session. \nOn Day 2\, participants will reconvene to discuss the assignments from the previous week. They will then get in-depth instruction on how to lead their own workshop participants in active listening and ways to create compassionate and brave spaces for connection among their workshop participants. Participants will also receive supportive “scripts” to help them as they develop their own style of leading. The class will end with discussion and final tips on how to create storytelling spaces in their own communities. \n  \nAbout the instructor for this training course: \n \nDr. Lisa Cantrell is a psychologist\, a tenured professor at Sacramento State University\, and the executive director of Capital Storytelling. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Indiana University and has produced stories for NPR. Dr. Cantrell has spent over a decade researching and training others on the power of storytelling\, and she has developed storytelling curriculum for use with educators\, physicians\, researchers\, and activists. They will then be given “homework” for the week that includes reflective questions and an assignment to practice what they have learned thus far in a small group setting before the following class session. \nOn Day 2\, participants will reconvene to discuss the assignments from the previous week. They will then get in-depth instruction on how to lead their own workshop participants in active listening and ways to create compassionate and brave spaces for connection among their workshop participants. Participants will also receive supportive “scripts” to help them as they develop their own style of leading. The class will end with discussion and final tips on how to create storytelling spaces in their own communities. \n  \nAbout the instructor for this training course: \n \nDr. Lisa Cantrell is a psychologist\, a tenured professor at Sacramento State University\, and the executive director of Capital Storytelling. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Indiana University and has produced stories for NPR. In fact\, we invite you and anyone else who is interested\, to put their name in our hat for a chance to tell us all a story. You can find the guidelines below. Come out to just listen or come tell a story! Food and beverages are for sell at the venue. \nSecond Tuesday of each month (check our calendar for dates!) \nLogOff Brewing\n3054 Sunrise Blvd Suite J  \nRancho Cordova\, CA 95742 \n  \nGuidelines for Your “Do Tell” Open Mic Story \n\n\n\nTell us a TRUE story about something you did or experienced:  Fiction is wonderful\, but we want to hear about events from your life and things that you have personally experienced! Lectures\, rants\, listicles\, guided meditations\, singalongs\, sermons\, and elevator pitches ALL have their place\, but this isn’t it.\nTry to keep it under 8 minutes:  We’ll give you a gentle one minute warning at 7 minutes; please wrap it up by 8 min so that there’s time for everyone else’s stories.\nLeave your notes and phones behind:  We find that the best personal stories are often those that are told without notes. So please don’t read your story to us – just tell it to us! (And we won’t judge you if you mix up the timeline or forget a part!)\nBe respectful:  We want everyone to feel welcome and respected\, so please do not use stereotypes\, slurs\, racial epithets\, or derogatory language about any group.  Also\, please do not use accents and dialects from cultures that are not your own.  If you are unsure about something in your story\, ask the host.\nAim for an R rating (or less):  We know y’all have some crazy stories (and we wanna hear ‘em)\, but let’s try to keep them R-rated or under.  And please read the room; if there are kids present consider giving a content warning to parents.  Sometimes opting for euphemisms instead of coarse language will do the trick…  And finally\, please give a content warning before your story if you think it could cause anyone fear or anxiety. \n\n\n\nTo put your name in the hat\, show up a little early and find the host! SUMMARY:Upward Together: A Celebration of Stories
DESCRIPTION:Laguna Town Hall \n3020 Renwick Ave. \nElk Grove\, CA \nMarch 30\, 2025 \n6:00 – 10:00 PM \nJoin us for our 2025 fundraising event! Four storytellers will take the stage to share stories in an unforgettable evening of celebration and connection. We’ll also have a silent auction with over a dozen prizes\, food trucks\, and drinks bar. Storytellers for the evening include Diana Medina\, John Aubert\, Ximena Ospina\, and Barbara Todd. \nSince our founding\, Capital Storytelling has impacted over 5000 lives through our events\, classes and workshops.  Much of our programming is free to our community. We do this work because we believe in the power of true storytelling to drive social change and to transform people and communities. Our fundraiser will allow us to continue this work and keep many of our events and workshops free and reduced in price. \nTickets are priced at different tiers. All tiers include free bottled water and hors d’oeuvres. General Admission is $50. If you want to go above and beyond to support our mission\, consider purchasing a “Big Supporter” Ticket ($100) or a “This Matters and We Need It” ticket ($250). You can also purchase an entire table ($1250) that seats 8 people and have your own party seated together with free drinks and storytelling near the front for the best seats in the house. When you purchase a VIP table you are reserving an entire table (which seats 8 people) right at the stage for the best seats in the house. Each person at your table will get 1 free drink ticket and our emcee will recognize you and your table during the event by thanking you or your company for reserving a VIP table. Each person will also receive a small gift as a token of our appreciation. Infants under the age of 1 year enter for free. \n  \nStorytellers for the evening include… \n                    Diana Medina  Storyteller   Diana is a first-generation Mexican-American poet and educator born and raised in Los Angeles\, CA.  Her mission in life is to use her gift with words to bring more clarity\, compassion\, and comic relief to the world. She’s a seasoned storyteller as well as a published author\, with her debut poetry collection\, Healing Out Loud\, published in 2020. She's also our Storyteller in Residence at Capital Storytelling!                    Barb Todd  Storyteller   Barb started her American journey after relocating from Canada for a nursing job 30 years ago. Moving from Vancouver\, British Columbia to Modesto\, California was a bit of a shock to the system\, but it launched her into an incredible life journey of marriage\, children\, new cities and a career in healthcare. Barb loves making connections through storytelling. “There is nothing more magical than laughing out loud\, tearing up or getting goosebumps as someone shares their story and a deep\, human connection is made.” She took a class in 2020 and then knew she wanted to be a part of the magic created through Capital Storytelling.                    John Aubert  Storyteller   John is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Sciences at American River College. After realizing that his family and friends were finally getting tired of hearing his stories\, he was ecstatic to discover that he could tell them to strangers!  He has taken the stage at numerous Moth Story Slams and has been a featured storyteller for Capital Storytelling\, Story Collider\, RISK!\, Armchair Anonymous\, Six Feet Apart Productions\, and Artists Standing Strong Together. John was a Story Ambassador in 2022 and is now our Assistant Events Producer\, as well as a storytelling instructor and coach.  He currently hosts Capital Storytelling’s Do Tell\, a monthly open mic for true\, personal stories.                    Ximena Ospina  Director of the Immigrant Storytelling Program   Dra. Ximena Ospina is a proud immigrant\, educator\, and storyteller. She is dedicated to healing and strengthening our global community through restorative justice\, innovation\, compassion\, and collaboration—storytelling has been a grounding practice for this work. In May 2024\, she earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership\, with her dissertation\, “The Latinx/e Student Cuentos of Rupture to Nurture: Understanding the Study Abroad Reentry Experience through Generational Dreaming\,” focusing on student cuentos [stories]. As a dynamic educational consultant\, Ximena leverages her expertise in storytelling\, coalition building\, equitable practices\, and impactful dialogues to drive transformative change. For her\, storytelling has been a path to self\, liberation\, and cultural preservation....          \n  \nFAQs \nQuestion: Where do I park?  \nAnswer: Street parking is free around the venue! You can find parking on Vaux Ave.\, Peets St.\, Renwick Ave.\, Nolan St.\, and E Mumford Ct.  There is also a parking lot in front of a small strip mall (but will be a little bit of a walk from the venue). If you want to park in that lot\, it can be found in the shopping area at Laguna West Plaza and Main Street Plaza. Check out our map below at the bottom of this FAQs section! \nQuestion: What should I wear to the event?  \nAnswer: The event is casual! You may wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Come as you are. \nQuestion: Will there be food? And are there veggie and vegan options? \nAnswer: Yes! We will provide free appetizers / hors d’oeuvres inside the event venue. We will ensure that some of the hors d’oeuvres are vegan! We have also hired three food trucks that will be behind the venue on W Mumford Ct. Two of these have vegetarian and vegan options! Hors d’oeuvres will be free with your ticket! The food trucks are for payment– but a percentage of the money will go to our fundraiser.  \nQuestion: How do I get into the event? Can I just show up and pay at the door? \nAnswer: We are encouraging our attendees to purchase a ticket before hand to help us know how many people to prepare for!
