He is a first-generation immigrant\, English language learner\, and Veteran of the US Marine Corps. Victor applied his unique perspectives to journalism\, specializing in news coverage\, and is proud to hold a degree in Intercultural Communications. He strives to become a communication specialist and help people from similar backgrounds: both veterans and first-generation immigrants\, for whom English is their second language. Today\, Victor creates culturally sensitive spaces for people to share their stories out loud and build communities where they feel both seen and heard. Anmol Pavade Storyteller Anmol Pavade (un-mole pava-day) is the eldest daughter of Punjabi and Tamil immigrants. As a storyteller\, cultural steward\, and earth advocate\, and future ancestor\, Anmol is passionate about bridging the gap between the past and the present. Kevin Aliado Storyteller Kevin Aliado is a Filipino immigrant who moved to the US in 2004. He spent a total of 18 years living in Las Vegas and the Bay Area before happily settling down in Sacramento last year. After working in the software and technology industry for over five years\, Kevin has recently started a career change to become a mental health therapist focusing on serving the immigrant community. He is very passionate about poetry\, spiritual healing\, and diving headfirst into immersive solo travel adventures. Monse Storyteller Monse is a student "from here\," "from there\," and sometimes "from every other where."  With a Mexican passport and a California driver's license\, they enjoy connecting through Latin dance festivals and trivial inquiries.  Currently\, Monse is an intern for Siemens and lives with their two cats\, Jack and Xochitl\, who keep them humble. William Tran Storyteller William is an educator and facilitator who is passionate about creating learning spaces where people can utilize their lived experiences to understand themselves\, others\, and the world around them. As a lifelong learner\, William is deeply interested in infusing universal human traits such as laughter\, play\, and music in the spaces that he facilitates. He believes that learning can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and community building. By telling our own stories\, we take control of our narratives and we can begin to change the societal narrative. We are each unique and each community within the larger Asian community is also unique. By sharing our stories with one another\, we find our commonalities and also uplift our differences. We then can find ways to take those narratives forward to our society to ultimately impact social change and create visibility of our API and Desi communities. \nWhat can I expect in this workshop? Writing our true personal stories and sharing them with others as well as listening to someone share their lived experiences can reduce feelings of isolation\, help us find own own voice\, and empower us in our healing process. It can help create a safe and courageous space for marginalized and vulnerable groups such as women\, non-binary and LGBTQI folks\, and immigrants and refugees. \nBy using storytelling\, we can transform the ways in which we can engage our communities across cultures and strengthen intergenerational relationships. In this interactive webinar\, our speaker Dr. Meghna Bhat will first provide an overview of the different kinds of storytelling and introduce us to creative ways of bringing storytelling to our communities. Framing storytelling as an artistic practice for building intergenerational communities\, she will further share the story and inspiration behind her own work\, Gulabi Stories: A South Asian Healing Initiative. Meghna will present a summary of findings from this initiative including participant demographics\, feedback\, and other reflections.  \n  \nREGISTER \n  \nAbout the speaker: \n \nMeghna Bhat\, PhD (she/her) is an independent gender and social justice consultant\, prevention educator\, scholar and storyteller based in Sacramento\, CA. Meghna also uses storytelling as a fun and creative way of finding her voice\, building community\, and learning from others’ stories. Meghna came to Capital Storytelling in 2019 and was selected as a Story Ambassador in 2022 for the organization. She now serves as a Mentor to the 2023 Ambassadors and co-leads the Immigrant Storytelling Program at Capital Storytelling. Lectures\, rants\, listicles\, guided meditations\, singalongs\, sermons\, and elevator pitches ALL have their place\, but this isn’t it.\nTry to keep it under 8 minutes:  We’ll give you a gentle one minute warning at 7 minutes; please wrap it up by 8 min so that there’s time for everyone else’s stories.\nLeave your notes and phones behind:  We find that the best personal stories are often those that are told without notes. So please don’t read your story to us – just tell it to us! She would do almost anything in the name of science and education – including authorizing an entire class of medical students to observe an invasive procedure on herself that she could not bear to witness. Known as the “Brain Lady” for bringing buckets of preserved human brains to elementary schools as part of a Brain Awareness Campaign\, she loves illuminating minds…one brain at a time. A proud aunt\, she relishes the fact that her nephew considers Mr. Axon – his plush neuron – to be worthy of show and tell at his preschool Alejandro Merchan Alejandro is an entomologist that hails from Colombia and lives in Sacramento since 2019\, working for the state government. He came to the US in 2007 to pursue a PhD at NC State University\, and after many twists and turns\, graduated in 2016. Alejandro likes to spend time with his cats\, Gabby and Haruki\, enjoys traveling and making crossword puzzles. Barb Todd Barb is an RN\, BSN who works in Patient Safety and Quality at a large hospital in Roseville\, CA. Barb was born\, raised and attended nursing school in Canada before being recruited by a California hospital over 30 years ago! That single decision to move launched her on an adventure that included marriage\, children\, new cities and new opportunities. One of those opportunities came through a chance encounter with Capital Storytelling. After attending a live event\, Barb was hooked! She attended classes and ultimately participated in the Capital Storytelling Ambassador program. Through the support of her fellow ambassadors\, Barb has loved bringing the amazing power of true\, personal storytelling to her healthcare colleagues! Leslie Allen An avid wilderness enthusiast\, Leslie earned degrees in Zoology and English from UC Davis and travelled the world as a wildlife researcher. Three kids later\, she settled in Northern California\, and her career shifted to "llama trekker\," allowing the whole family to continue wilderness adventuring. After years of working in the wilderness\, Leslie entered the urban jungle to become a science teacher\, sharing her love of the natural world with future generations. Now retired\, she continues to celebrate nature through non-profit conservation work and art. Xavier Bettencourt For over two decades Xavier Bettencourt has been bringing laughter to the Sacramento and Bay Areas.
